Healthcare Council’s year-end Flash Survey show that 40 percent of the region’s hospitals experienced a loss from operations and the majority of these hospitals have less than 100 beds. The Flash Survey reflects data from 60 western Pennsylvania hospitals and covers Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 beginning July 1, 2015 and ending June 30, 2016. The survey reflects a decline in operating margins for small hospitals in the region over a three-year period. The survey also reflects trends that impact all of the region’s hospitals. These trends include the continuing impact of government payors and decreases in several indicators including surgical operations, patient days, admissions and emergency room registrations.
